Equine Industry Leaders to Converge in Washington for Congressional Fly-In, Advocate for New Farm Bill and Equine Health and Welfare Funding

(Washington, D.C) Next week, members of the nation’s leading equine association, the American Horse Council (AHC), will travel to Capitol Hill for a congressional fly-in to urge lawmakers to prioritize the equine industry in the upcoming Farm Bill, with special focus on funding for equine health and welfare programs and supportive tax policies.

 The delegation, representing horse owners, breeders, veterinarians, farriers, racetracks, and equine service providers, will meet directly with Members of Congress and key staff to highlight the critical role the equine sector plays in the U.S. economy and rural communities. The industry contributes $177 billion annually and supports millions of jobs across the country.

Key Advocacy Points

  • Support for the New Farm Bill: The group will emphasize the importance of including robust funding for animal health initiatives, such as disease preparedness and response programs, and urge Congress to ensure that the equine industry is recognized and supported alongside other agricultural sectors
  • Equine Health and Welfare: Advocates will call for continued and expanded federal investment in the United States Department of
  • Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service programs that protect the national horse herd from disease threats and support animal welfare.
  • Tax Policies: The delegation will push for tax policies that support small businesses, family farms, and ranches, including incentives for investments in equine assets and parity in depreciation schedules for racehorses and other equine property.
  • Expanded access to temporary visa programs (H-2A/H2-B): AHC members will ask Congress to support efforts by USDA Secretary Rollins to address critical farm labor shortages.

  • Awards Luncheon honoring industry leaders and supporters to include the Honorable Andy Barr (R-KY-6), Co-chair of the Congressional Horse Caucus.
  • Special presentation by the Army’s Old Guard Caisson Platoon along with Olympic medalist, David O’Connor.
