WASHINGTON, DC— May is Adopt A Horse Month, and according to the Equine Welfare Data Collective, there can be anywhere up to 40,000 horses waiting for adoption in the United States each year. From off-track Thoroughbreds to retired broodmares or even donkeys or ponies looking for a new pasture, it seems like you can find an adoptable horse, pony, or donkey to fit whatever your needs somewhere in the United States.
To help kick off Adopt A Horse Month, the American Horse Council Podcast shines a light on how the United Horse Coalition, Equine Welfare Data Collective, and A Home For Every Horse are working to help encourage horse adoptions and responsible ownership.
AHC President Julie Broadway and Megan Arszman talk with the Equine Welfare Data Collective’s Kelsey Buckley and the United Horse Coalition’s Andrea to highlight the work these two groups are doing to highlight equine rescues and sanctuaries across the country and how prospective horse owners can prepare themselves for adopting a horse, pony or donkey.
“As we all know, the horse industry has historically been dominated by anecdotal stories and evidence,” Buckley says about her work with the EWDC. “The reports made for the EWDC show base trends on capacity, the current populations in these welfare organizations, assistance services that are out there for owners, and more.”
The newly strengthened partnership between the UHC and A Home For Every Horse is also highlighted during the podcast. Melissa Kitchen joins Broadway to highlight the big things happening in May and throughout the year as part of the partnership, including free Purina Feed coupons going to approved horse rescues and sanctuaries this month.
“This partnership highlights the commitment of the American Horse Council and the United Horse Coalition, along with A Home For Every Horse, to bolster support for the horse rescues and sanctuaries that protect the horse,” says Broadway.
In this month’s Legislative Update, Julie updates listeners on updates on the Farm Bill and shares some of the enticing topics that will be discussed at the Annual American Horse Council Conference and National Issues Forum, which will be held June 9-11 in Washington, D.C.
