As natural disasters become more common, the equine community has repeatedly rallied to help those in need. Below are several organizations that assist those in need when a natural disaster strikes. While supplies can be useful to those in disaster situations, donating funds can usually be the best course of action to help.
- United States Equestrian Federation Equine Disaster Relief Fund: Developed in 2005 during the aftermath of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund was formed to help ensure the safety and well-being of horses during trying times. Since its inception, over $370,000 has been donated to aid horses across all breeds in disaster-related situations. To donate to the USEF Disaster Relief Fund: https://www.usef.org/donate
- American Association of Equine Practitioners Foundation Equine Disaster Relief Fund: When disasters occur and horses are involved the Foundation stands ready to help where needed. As a trusted source in the equine industry the Foundation serves as a leader in organizing efforts and funds to support relief of horses in need because of natural disaster. The Foundation aims to focus its disaster support through preparedness training and education. A prepared response is more effective and provides a greater impact for the welfare of horses. The Foundation also serves as a leader in supporting programs that assist in preparing for disasters. Efforts to aid horses during times of need have received funding from the AAEP Foundation for supplies, limited equipment, communication support and training. - Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International Disaster Relief Fund: The fund helps centers in need due to catastrophic disasters not normally covered by operating insurance. This includes flooding. The fund was started in 2005 to help centers with the damage inflicted by Hurricane Katrina. To donate, click here: Donate to the PATH Intl. Disaster Relief Fund.
