Larkin State Park Trail in Southbury, Oxford, Naugatuck and Waterbury, CT
This 11-mile wildlife corridor of scenic and historic areas was dedicated by the late Charles Larkin to the State of Connecticut as a designated State Bridle Trail. For information, contact (860) 424-3200. (Department of Environmental Protection, State of Connecticut)
Passing through the rolling hills of western Connecticut between Danbury and Waterbury, one can see traces of a rail line. The route once boasted of providing the only direct passenger and freight service from Waterbury, Connecticut to Brewster, New York. In 1943, several years after the railway had been abandoned, a 10.3 mile section was given to the state by Dr. Charles L. Larkin for the purpose of establishing a state park and bridle trail.
